Fun stuff and miscellaneous

Shout out for local businesses

  • Second Half on Main, the Third Place:  "We all need a dependable place of refuge where, for a few minutes a day, we can escape from the demands of our daily lives. It's that place where you can relax and unwind. Your third place. It's not your home, and not your work. Those are the first two places. It's the third place where we all go "to be".  (Ray Oldenberg, author of The Great Good Place)
  • Diana's Impressions - local artist, oil painting by commission.
  • Mara's cafe and bakery - another 'third place' sans alchohol.
  • Adams Beer Garden - One of the few places where you can buy and smoke a cigar (on the outside cigard deck); extensive selection of beers on tap, specials, games and pool table, bands on weekends...
  • Maxfields on Main, Boonton - one of the few places to have quality live music everyweek.  Blues, rockabilly, jazz, country.
  • ETD Discount tire has always done reasonable car repairs for me, for decades.

Recommended free computer tools

  • CCleaner - Make sure you edit this to exclude cleaning anything you don't want to remove!  Especially regarding browser software.  I recommend only removing temporary files.  In addition, you should run the registry cleaner and SAVE the items it finds that could be removed (in case the software makes an error you can recover the registry).  What's a 'registry'?  It's like the table of contents of your computer that gets edited every time you install or make a change to software.
  • Malwarebytes and ADWCleaner from the same company.  Most problems with slow browsers can be resolved with these services.
  • Hitman pro can be purchased to root out more serious threats
  • Download.com, FileHippo, SourceForge.net - Make sure when installing any program that you choose the 'advanced' install which will allow you to avoid installing programs or features you don't want!!!

Fun and educational free games

  • SourceForge.net has FreeCiv and FreeCol - games that mimic the old Civilization and Conlization games.  They are challenging and educational.
